We work on the mathematical foundations and practical methods of trustworthy artificial intelligence — federated learning, explainable AI, and fairness in machine learning — at the Department of Computer Science, Aalto University.

Who we are looking for

Doctoral researchers. A strong background in mathematics is what matters most: probability, linear algebra, optimisation. Prior publications are not expected. You should be comfortable reading a proof and writing code, and interested in why a method works rather than only that it does.

Post-doctoral researchers. A completed PhD in machine learning, statistics, signal processing, optimisation, or a closely related field, and a track record that overlaps with our research.

Thesis students at Aalto. Bachelor’s and master’s thesis topics are available in all of our research areas. Aalto students are welcome to get in touch directly.

What we work on

  • Federated learning for network-structured and heterogeneous data
  • Explainable and intrinsically simulatable models
  • Fairness, accountability and transparency in AI
  • Machine learning for healthcare

Our work is supported by the Research Council of Finland (MATHFUL), the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation (TRUST-FELT), and Business Finland (FLAIG). Details of each grant are on the research page.

How to apply

Write to alex.jung@aalto.fi with:

  1. A short statement of what you want to work on, and why this group
  2. Your CV, including a list of relevant courses and grades
  3. A writing sample — a thesis, a course project report, or a preprint
  4. Names of one or two referees

Please put “PhD application” or “Post-doc application” in the subject line. We read everything, and reply to applications that fit the group’s current work.

Before you write

Two things make an application much easier to evaluate: name a specific paper or research direction of ours that you want to build on, and say what you would want to do next with it. Generic applications sent to many groups at once are easy to recognise and rarely go anywhere.

If you are not sure whether your background fits, write anyway and say what you are unsure about.
